Reiki Healing Explained: Benefits, Science, and What to Expect
Reiki is one of the most widely practiced forms of energy healing in the world, yet it remains one of the most misunderstood. If you've heard the term but aren't quite sure what it involves — or whether it's right for you — you're in good company. Many of our clients at Lumi Wellness come to their first Reiki session with curiosity and a healthy dose of skepticism. By the end, most are surprised by how profoundly relaxed and centered they feel.
Let's explore what Reiki actually is, what the research says, and what a session looks like in practice.
What Is Reiki?
Reiki (pronounced RAY-kee) is a Japanese healing technique developed in the early 1920s by Mikao Usui. The word itself combines two Japanese concepts: rei (universal) and ki (life energy). At its core, Reiki is based on the idea that a trained practitioner can channel healing energy to a client through gentle touch or by holding their hands just above the body.
Unlike massage therapy, Reiki doesn't involve muscle manipulation, kneading, or pressure. Instead, it works on the energetic level — aiming to clear blockages, restore balance, and support the body's innate ability to heal itself.
Reiki is non-invasive, requires no special preparation, and is suitable for people of all ages and health conditions.
How Does Reiki Work?
Reiki practitioners are trained through a lineage-based system of attunements, typically progressing through three levels. During a session, the practitioner places their hands lightly on or just above specific areas of the body — often corresponding to major energy centers known as chakras.
Clients commonly report sensations of warmth, tingling, or gentle pulsing during a session. Some feel a deep wave of calm wash over them, while others experience emotional release or vivid imagery. Many simply fall into a profoundly restful state.
The mechanism isn't fully understood by Western science, but the effects are increasingly documented. The prevailing theory is that Reiki activates the parasympathetic nervous system — the body's "rest and digest" mode — which triggers a cascade of healing responses: reduced heart rate, lower cortisol, improved circulation, and enhanced immune function.
What Does the Research Say?
While Reiki research is still evolving, a growing body of peer-reviewed studies suggests meaningful benefits:
- Pain reduction. A 2019 systematic review published in the Journal of Evidence-Based Integrative Medicine found that Reiki was associated with significant reductions in pain across multiple clinical settings.
- Anxiety and stress relief. A study in the Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine demonstrated measurable decreases in anxiety and stress hormones following Reiki sessions.
- Improved quality of life in cancer patients. Research conducted at major medical centers — including the Cleveland Clinic and Memorial Sloan Kettering — has shown that Reiki can reduce anxiety, pain, and fatigue in cancer patients undergoing treatment.
- Better sleep. Multiple studies have linked Reiki sessions to improvements in sleep quality, particularly for people dealing with chronic stress or illness.
It's worth noting that many hospitals and healthcare systems now offer Reiki as a complementary therapy — a strong signal that the medical community takes its benefits seriously.

What to Expect During a Reiki Session
A typical Reiki session at Lumi Wellness lasts 60 minutes. Here's what the experience looks like:
- Brief consultation. Your practitioner will ask about your current state — physically, emotionally, and energetically — and discuss any specific intentions or concerns.
- Settling in. You'll lie fully clothed on a comfortable massage table. Shoes come off, but everything else stays on.
- The session. Your practitioner will move through a series of hand positions, starting at the head and working down to the feet. Touch is extremely light or hands may hover slightly above the body.
- Integration. After the session, you'll have a few minutes to rest and reorient. Your practitioner may share observations and suggest practices to extend the benefits.
Most people leave feeling deeply relaxed, clear-headed, and grounded. Some notice shifts in energy, mood, or sleep patterns in the days following a session.
